Sosua is a typical Spanish-Caribbean town full of life. With a well balanced mix of local industry and tourism it offers a solid infrastructure for daily needs. Beautiful coral reefs lie just offshore and provide an impressive underwater habitat. The corals and colorful tropical fish can provide hours of entertainment for snorkeling and scuba diving alike. It is a most precious Caribbean destination for sure. Sosua is the Acapulco of the Dominican Republic. You could say that this is where tourism first began back in the early 70s. Even though development has spread, it has created a very nice international community. Foreigners who originally came for a beach holiday have now established their own ex-pat communities and businesses. There are large numbers of Europeans and Americans who live here year round even though most of the foreigners living is Sosua come from north America. The one kilometer long Sosua Beach continues to be the main attraction of the area. In spite of the large number vendors who have set up their shops right on the beach, it’s still one of the most spectacular. For more information about where Sosua is located, please click here. Sosua was originally settled by around 600 Jewish refugees fleeing the Second World War. They started different businesses in the area and set up a dairy community. As a result, Sosua began to thrive and was soon discovered by the wealthy from nearby Puerto Plata, Santiago and San Francisco de Macoris who came and set up vacation homes. Many of the original Jewish settlers have gone, but the original dairy that produces the Productos Sosua continues to this day, although now owned by a Mexican multinational. Read more about the history of the Jewish settlement in Sosua here. In the 90s, tourism evolved towards the all-inclusive trend and several large resorts were built in the area. Guests still come from nearby Playa Grande, Rio San Juan, Playa Dorada and Puerto Plata for dining and beach town shopping. The streets are well lit and there are lots of people outside day and night. Motorcycle rentals are common. And there are many minibuses and taxis for trips to Puerto Plata, Playa Dorada or Cabarete. In Sosua, you are near all the attractions in Puerto Plata, Playa Dorada, Cabarete and Playa Grande (about one hour's drive away). Those in good physical shape should attempt the trek up the Damajagua mountain and down the 27 cascades. On the next day drive east all the way to Rio San Juan, Pueblito Principe (a small Dominican-style shopping street) and Playa Grande in María Trinidad Sánchez province, with a stop at Cabarete Beach. And there is plenty of golf in the area, first and most famous is the spectacular “Playa Grande Golf Course” just 50 minutes away. This “Robert Trent Jones, Sr.” signature course is world renowned for its 12 ocean front holes that have earned it the nickname “Pebble Beach of the Caribbean” The course plays along high ocean bluffs and hills that provide breathtaking views of the ocean below. To provide both challenge and enjoyment for a variety of levels, tee choices produce course lengths from 4488 to over 7000 yards. A bit closer to home, 25 minutes in the opposite direction is the “Playa Dorada Golf Course” designed by the same golf course architect as an 18 hole par 72 course. Presently in the planning stages is the Sea Horse Ranch Golf Course, which will be the closest golf course to Infiniti Blu, just 5 minutes drive away. It is being designed in the beautiful rolling hills of the Choco area of Sosua. The 18 hole par 72 course set in the beautiful green hills overlooking the ocean, will challenge even pro level golfers. |
